Orca Sound Project x Hannah Warner Turns Ibiza’s Plastic Waste Into Recycled Jewellery

Recycled Jewellery

‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ proclaims the old adage about finding beauty and value in something that has been carelessly discarded. Proving there’s truth in the proverb is a meaningful collaboration between environmental organisation Orca Sound Project and British designer Hannah Warner, who have teamed up to create a collection of recycled jewellery.

Consisting of three different lines – two styles of rings and one charm necklace – each piece in the collection is completely unique and made with 100% upcycled ocean plastic collected on Ibiza’s shores. The colourful micro plastics are set in either ethically sourced silver or gold-plated with 3 microns gold. Each design available in three different colourways.

Named Calypso, Nova and Eclipse, the recycled jewellery designs pay tribute to a family of whales born into the Southern Resident Orca community. This particular collective of whale pods is located in the northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and the only orca population to be listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Members of the Orca Sound Project collect plastic waste from our beaches.

Jolyon Klean, founder of Orca Sound Project, says, ‘We are committed to supporting the preservation of Ibiza and inspiring ongoing conscious living and tourism on the island. This jewellery collection is a visual expression of our collaborative responsibility to live more consciously and protect our oceans.’

The numbers surrounding plastic pollution in Ibiza are staggering. In 2019, the Balearic Island generated an average of half a tonne of waste per person. That is 14% higher than the rest of Europe. This year, together with their eco partner Casita Verda, Orca Sound Project collected more than 1.5 tons of plastic waste on the White Isle before Spain went into lockdown in March 2020. With no local recycling facilities for plastic waste, it is estimated that Ibiza has only approximately five years’ worth of landfill space left.

Hannah Warner Jewellery is known for her contemporary yet elegant way with precious metals.

These worrying figures convinced jewellery designer Hannah Warner to support the project. She explains, ‘All of us are aware of the dangers our planet is in. When the Orca team showed me the staggering statistics of Ibiza’s waste problem and the time it has to create change, there was no hesitation from me to get involved in a creative project with them, collaborating with their process of collecting and compressing plastic waste and reusing it to make wearable pieces of jewellery. Every consumer of each piece of the collection will be helping towards the cause.’

Known for her contemporary yet elegant designs, you might have spotted Hannah Warner Jewellery creations on the likes of Rihanna in Vogue China, American artist Tati Compton and model Alice Dellal. Meanwhile, after successful activations with the likes of legendary South African duo Goldfish and Sam Feldt, as well as campaigns with Glastonbury Festival, Ultra Music Festival, ADE, IMS, Nike x Asos and London Fashion Week, Orca Sound Project has become one of the most recognisable up-and-coming names in marine plastic waste solutions.

hW x Orca Sound Project has given the classic signet ring an eco-conscious update.

So it’s unsurprising that hW x Orca Sound Project has already won an army of fans from the worlds of music and fashion, with DJs, actors and models including Jamie Jones, Damian Lazarus, Jaime Winstone and Lady Mary Charteris all proudly showing off their trinkets.

Starting from £160.00, 20% of each piece sold will go directly towards supporting clean-up activities on Ibiza. With Orca Sound Project’s ability to turn 100% of collected plastic waste into circular building materials, the team hopes to turn the plastic into an installation to be displayed in Ibiza’s airport to help raise awareness whilst encouraging island residents and visitors alike to be more mindful about the footprint they leave behind…

The hW x Orca Sound Project Ocean Jewellery Collection is now on sale at www.orcasoundproject.com . To see Hannah Warner’s full range of designs go to www.hannahwarner.com
