You’ve gone from bronzing yourself on the beach straight onto Sundowners before losing yourself in Ibiza’s nightlife. You got your hand signed by Dubfire and were kicked out of DC10 at sunrise. You refuelled over a champagne-filled late lunch at Nassau Beach Club and soon found the beats tempting you to do it all over again. And again. And again.
I don’t know about you, but as much I love the White Isle’s relentless ‘whatever, whenever, forever’ attitude, it is usually around day five or six of my Ibiza holiday that I start to feel in need of a little – dare I say it – break? And so it’s either time to admit defeat and go home (shock, horror) or find yourself a hideaway from all the madness…
Agroturismo Atzaró has been on my wish list of places to check out for a long time, so I was thrilled when, during a recent press trip hosted by Essential Ibiza, our group was invited to spend an afternoon chilling out in the lush gardens before having dinner at the hotel’s onsite restaurant La Veranda. And after a week of eating, drinking and partying a little bit of clean living was more than called for!
Tucked away in the middle of the island, Atzaró is a traditional Spanish finca that has been converted into a luxury boutique guesthouse and spa combining rustic charm with modern Balinese accents.
Surrounded by an ancient orange grove, the gardens are filled with lush green foliage, tropical plants and vibrant flowers. Dotted around the two swimming pools are comfortable day beds beckoning you to lay your head while you wait for a treatment in the nearby spa facilities – which is exactly what we did!
Home to the island’s only open-air wellness centre, the hotel boasts a Swedish sauna, hammam, gym and eight wooden cabins for massages, face and body treatments, making it an ideal place for connecting with nature and getting away from it all.
Waking ourselves up with a refreshing dip in the pool, we reluctantly abandoned our blissful set-up to get changed for dinner, all the while pondering how we could possibly a) find husbands, quickly, just so we could get married at Atzaró or b) move in and stay forever.
This, it has to be noted, was before we had even tried any of the food. Because if there is such a thing as ‘a face that can launch a thousand ships’, La Veranda has the menu to cancel a thousand flights.
The whole Atzaró experience has a strong focus on wellbeing and health, so the eatery aims to create delicious creations cooked from fresh, seasonal ingredients found on the island while paying tribute to Ibiza’s fragrant flavours and scents.
As you can see from the pictures above, we had a hard time deciding between dishes and ordered a selection (read: all) of the starters including beetroot gazpacho, ‘Burrata’ mozzarella with green pesto and sun dried tomatoes and tuna tartar.
With so many great restaurants on the White Isle it’s almost impossible to pick a favourite, but La Veranda ranks very, very highly indeed – not only because of the tasty food, but also because of the pretty surroundings and laid-back atmosphere. Plus, it’s good for you!
Sadly our dinner also marked the end of our trip and I’m sure I can speak for the whole group when I say watching the sun set over the hills that night was a tiny bit heartbreaking.
After an incredible week hosted by Essential Ibiza, we were so reluctant to leave the island there was a last-minute frenzy attempting to change our flights so we could stay out for another 24 hours or so. Because it makes sense, right? Right…
We almost caused Skyscanner to crash as we hurriedly tried to find a reasonable connection, shouting out credit card details in the process, before common sense finally took hold and we admitted defeat. (Partly because we knew we’d have extra legroom and a hot breakfast awaiting us on our Monarch flight, creatures of comfort that we are.)
Too soon, it was time to bid farewell; only to start plotting our return immediately. Out of season, Atzaró offers very reasonable rates of 120€ per night (based on two people sharing) including breakfast and access to the spa facilities, so I think it’s safe to say I’ll be back…
