Las Cicadas Art Residency celebrates third edition with Open Studio

Las Cicadas Art Residency 2025

While most people envision summer’s sizzling days and sultry nights when they think of Ibiza, the tranquil winter months are when the island truly comes into its own.

With a serene stillness wrapping the Mediterranean hotspot into a comforting hug, many residents savour this well-deserved break from the season’s frenetic pace and enjoy the blue-skied sunny days, untouched beaches and vivid sunsets as they catch a breath. For many, it’s also a time to turn towards their creative pursuits and passions again.

And while Ibiza is luxuriating in this idyllic island bubble, beautiful private hire venue Las Cicadas has once again opened its doors to welcome a selection of international artists chosen to participate in the creative oasis’ annual Art Residency.

Now in its third edition, the programme is running from January 6th until February 10th 2025 with six artists residing at the 500-year-old farmhouse.

The third edition of the Las Cicadas Art Residency is currently taking place and will culminate in an Open Studio day on February 8th 2025.

Organised by Las Cicadas co-founders Tavis Buschmann and Nora Bullerjahn together with gallerist and art curator Sarah Suco Torres, the mission of the Art Residency is to introduce multidisciplinary artists from diverse backgrounds to the natural beauty and unique atmosphere of the White Island, which has sparked the inspiration of painters, musicians and writers for many decades.

During their stay, those lucky enough to be chosen for the Las Cicadas Art Residency enjoy the use of a private bedroom and bathroom, two shared studio spaces, and other communal areas of the striking property inside and out while they focus on their work.

It’s a programme that encourages an exchange between the artists amongst each other and with their hosts, as well as the exploration of Ibiza in its serene winter mode. Furthermore, the Las Cicadas team is at hand to help with production and introduce the artists to the local community during excursions, private dinners and, finally, the Open Studio at the end of their stay.

Las Cicadas owner Tavis, who lovingly and respectfully restored the historic finca together with his wife, Nora, told us of the Art Residency, “Nora is a painter and I’m a musician, so we always wanted Las Cicadas to become a hub for artists, and enjoy this space with our friends and fellow creatives.”

The historic farmhouse has opened its doors to a selection of international artists for the third time.
The quiet winter months are the perfect time for the artists to explore the island and focus on their work in this beautiful setting.

This year, six artists from Spain, Italy, France and Guadeloupe, a French overseas region in the southern Caribbean sea, are participating in the Las Cicadas Art Residency.

Sarah explains, “An evolution from previous editions, in 2025 we have one group of artists staying for a duration of five weeks – instead of two groups for four weeks each. It allows the artists to work in a more peaceful rhythm.”

They include Claudio Coltorti from Naples, Italy, whose paintings “envisage the infinite possibilities where reality and vision expands, suspended between the figurative and the abstract”.

Kenny Dunkan, from Guadaloupe, is another artist-in-residency. He regularly draws on the visual culture of the Caribbean in his works; particularly carnivals and periods of social, cultural and political role reversal to address France’s colonial heritage and the persistence of its modes of representation.

Charles Hascoët from Paris, France, is exploring historical art tropes, iconic films, and childhood memories to paint nostalgic scenes that exist between reality and imagination, fusing discordant symbols into domestic still lives, romantic portraits, and dreamlike landscapes to create fantastical narratives.

Hadrien Gerenton from Lyon, France, currently lives and works in Bangkok and is dedicating his art to the exploration of the prehistoric forms of cacti and lizards, with a fascination for how both of these life forms survive in environments that humans, possibly, could not.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Mora from Alcalá de Henares, Spain, is creating an abstract mode of communication focused on three concepts: Overlapping, concealment and disappearance in painting. His striking compositions construct environments through which the artist questions protocols and procedures of contemporary painting.

Finally, Giovanni Ozzola from Florence, Italy, is conceptualising and representing “infinity and exploration, both geographic and introspective”, through photography, video art, and installation, but also through traditional techniques such as engraving and “fresco”.

Gallerist and art curator Sarah Suco Torres is the driving force behind the Art Residency, with the full support from Las Cicadas owners Tavis Buschman and Nora Bullerjahn.

Both Guillermo and Giovanni were recipients of the Acquisition and Residency Awards granted by CAN Art Fair in June 2024, winning the prize of a place at the Las Cicadas Art Residency for this year.

Sarah says, “It was such an honour to offer the award at CAN, and to collaborate with such a great team who is doing an amazing job at bringing a lot of visibility to the island. For me, collaboration is the key – it’s important to grow, and to improve!

“During my five years at Perrotin [the renowned international art gallery], we were constantly collaborating with musicians, hotels… so I’ve learned a lot from that experience. Contemporary art needs to become more accessible!”

As this year’s programme draws to a close, the team and artists are busy preparing for the upcoming Open Studio, which will be held on Saturday, February 8th.

Exhibiting the pieces of art that have been created during the residents’ stay at Las Cicadas across the grounds and many enchanting spaces of the property, it gives island residents and art lovers the opportunity to see the fruits of their labour in a charismatic and inspiring setting that differs from the classic white-walled setting of a gallery.

In exchange for their space at the Art Residency, the artists are encouraged to leave behind one of their pieces created at Las Cicadas.
Guillermo Mora is from Alcalá de Henares, Spain, and is one of the recipients of the Acquisition and Residency Awards granted by CAN Art Fair in June 2024.

Exactly this was the idea that inspired Art Residency organiser Sarah, who also runs the charming Can Garrita exhibition space in Portinatx.

“We are used to seeing art in a gallery or a museum, so my challenge was to present it in a different way. I wanted to take it out of ‘the white cube’ to modernise and rethink the space, and thus the time,” she explains.

“The idea is to forge a triangle of communication between us, the artists and the island community, through which the diverse international talent can be discovered.”

The Open Studio of the Art Residency 2025 will take place at Las Cicadas on Saturday, February 8th, from 13:00 to 16:00. For further information or to apply, please get in touch via art@lascicadas.com and follow on Instagram at @lascicadasartresidency.
