Move over Cereal Killer: London’s first porridge cafe opens

Porridge Café is bringing gourmet oats to health-conscious Londoners

Hot on the heels of the hype surrounding London’s first specialty cornflakes cafe Cereal Killer, the capital is gaining another addition to the deli breakfast scene.

Shoreditch pop-up Porridge Café will be focusing on healthy grains for wellness-conscious city dwellers, serving up 11 different varieties of the humble classic.

Headed up by Nik Williamson and Elly Harrington, who previously ran street food company Bow Street Kitchen, there are both sweet and savoury options including ingredients like apple, cinnamon, chorizo, chilli, and leek, as well as toppings such as beetroot, poached egg and oranges.

Founder Nik told The Independent, “The grains are what give us real variety. Even calling the savoury option porridge is a stretch; it is really a risotto dish. We’re hoping the product speaks for itself. We’re trying to steer away from gimmick and focus on making more and more porridge.”

While Cereal Killer has come under fire for what some argued were inflated prices, Porridge Café claims to offer “more value and less novelty”.

“We’re not in it to make a fortune; we’re just trying to make some really great food. Our most expensive porridge is £7, ” Nik added.

Porridge Café opens March 2nd 2015 on Paul Street in Shoreditch and runs until the end of the month.
