Time to glow up! Relax, rejuvenate and radiate with The Skin Therapy Coach

Hands up if you agree: There’s nothing quite like clean, toned and glowing post-facial skin to make you look and feel your best.

Especially in Ibiza, where barefaced beauty arguably befits the laid-back Balearic lifestyle and sun-drenched days better than a fully made up face, treating your teint to some expert pampering can boost your mood and confidence all at the same time.

Whether you’re a hardworking island resident or jet-setting visitor, on the White Island healthy, glowing skin is just a quick WhatsApp message away thanks to Laila Martin, also known as The Skin Therapy Coach.

With a holistic approach that takes into account your lifestyle, nutrition and external factors such as your environment and stress levels, the mobile skincare pro is on a mission to leave her clients with a complexion so good they don’t even want to cover it up.

When we sit down with Laila for a consultation at her cosy home treatment room, she explains, “Personally, I’d rather spend money on skincare to make my skin the best it can be. If you improve your skin, you need less make-up.”

It was during her time living and working in Singapore that Laila’s curiosity about skincare was sparked as she began to experiment with enticing-looking lotions and potions. Asian beauty products are often hailed as the Holy Grail of cosmetics, and the metropolitan capital offered a veritable smorgasbord to discover.

She says, “Back then I didn’t really know what I was doing in terms of what I was putting on my skin. I just tried different brands because they looked good or people recommended them.”

However, after arriving in Ibiza, Laila began to adopt a more natural approach. She explains, “Living here has made me become so much more aware of nature. We are so much more in tune with the seasons and the moon cycles, which I wasn’t noticing so much in my fast-paced city life.”

Making her own beauty products started as a creative outlet and relaxing pastime. “My first concoction was a really simple salt body scrub made with additional herbs and essential oils. I love working with clay from the island, and freshly dried rosemary or lavender that is ground up,” Laila says. ”I love it because there are always new ingredients coming out that you can experiment with. It’s endless what you can create – in the beginning I was making a different face mask recipe every week.”

Like for so many others, the pandemic proved a professional turning point that encouraged Laila to pursue her developing passion as a career. Thinking about future-proofing her work in these uncertain times, she decided to pivot towards a business that could be run fully online if need be.

Signing up for a coaching course, Laila remembers, “At the start, the teacher said, ‘So you want to be a coach… but what are you going to coach?’ He asked us to make a list of things that we are interested in and I wrote down travel, skincare and music. I googled the term ‘skin coach’ and it turned out to be a big thing in the US already. But I couldn’t find anything similar in Ibiza.”

The idea of offering bespoke ‘personal training’ for her would-be clients’ skin was born. Much like a fitness professional, those who want to improve their complexion can book in for individual consultation sessions and treatments or comprehensive, longer-term coaching.

Homemade bath salts and body scrubs.
The Skin Therapy coach also frequently hosts workshops on creating your own beauty products, working with the lunar cycles or ‘how to Gua Sha’ .

Educating herself further, Laila studied nutrition, gained a skincare diploma and, eventually, took part in a course to learn different facial techniques in Mallorca. As chance – or the Covid-19 pandemic – would have it, she ended up being the only participant on the week-long course and, as a result, received a completely private, one-on-one training.

Laila recalls, “I stayed at the teacher’s villa in the mountains, where she has a studio and a spa, and she completely tailored the course to what I wanted to learn. She taught me all the basic facial techniques as well as massage, and she also gave me the idea to work with crystals.”

Did anybody say… crystals? As avid lovers of the colourful gems and firm believers in their wellness-boosting energies, we didn’t need asking twice to try the 75-minute Rose Quartz Goddess facial. As well as nurturing your skin with all-natural scrubs, serums and creams, part of the process involves having a mask made of hundreds of the pale pink ‘love’ stones placed on your face.

Yet, with many other yummy options on The Skin Therapy Coach’s treatment menu, it was hard to commit to just one. From easing tension and wrinkles to detoxing the skin, firming and toning the face or combatting dark undereye circles, there was just too much goodness to choose from – and, arguably, we needed all of it

After 75 minutes of pampering, we felt like we had undergone a mini face lift.

Thankfully, Laila offered to create a personalised facial combining elements from two different facials. But, before we began, we were invited to choose two crystals that would later be used during the massage part of the treatment.

We began with a calming almond cleanser, followed by the heavenly scented enzyme scrub made with pineapple and aloe vera gel. After placing a cooling sheet drenched in a nourishing serum on our face, it was time for the rose quartz face mask to be layered on top.

Like a soothing weighted blanket, the added pressure helped to decrease puffiness while the comforting heaviness reduced any muscle tension. Resting with the rose quartz mask on our face for 15 minutes, we almost drifted off into a gentle slumber.

Adding further moisture with a hyaluronic acid serum mixed with aloe vera and rose water, the treatment finished with a gentle crystal massage using Laila’s hero product, the Ibiza Super Glow Balm.

An all-round miracle worker, Laila’s own recipe is jam-packed with antioxidants and can be used in a myriad of ways: On top of moisturiser to add a beautiful shimmer, as a cleansing balm, overnight cream or face mask, to hydrate during long-haul flights or for jetlag skin recovery, as a cuticle balm and make-up remover.

She laughs, “In the beginning, my friends were getting the Ibiza Super Glow Balm off me and they were absolutely raving about it. Some girls say they can’t live without it, and the minute they run out they come back for more. It gives you the perfect glow, and one client even said that her wrinkles are fading. Hopefully, it is the first product of many.”

Having arrived at The Skin Therapy Coach’s home studio with tired, dehydrated skin and a slightly puffy face, we have to do a double-take when we look into the mirror after 75 minutes of pampering. No word of a lie nor exaggeration, it’s like we had a mini facelift. Our facial features look tighter, brighter, and are iridescent with the sheen of the famous Ibiza Super Glow Balm. Furthermore, we are happy to report that this effect lasted several days.

The Skin Therapy Coach’s Ibiza Super Glow Balm is an all-round miracle worker.

Tempted to try it? Whether you come to Ibiza on holiday or live on the island year-round, there are various ways to benefit from Laila’s incredible knowledge.

Laila says, “At the end of the day, there is no quick fix for your skin where, magically, everything is perfect. It is affected by so many different factors, and I love to teach people how they can take care of their complexion from the inside out, and with simple, all-natural ingredients, so they are literally glowing.”
