So, you’re going to be in Ibiza for the solar eclipse? Here’s where to watch it – and how to celebrate it!
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Ibiza will become one of the best places in Europe to witness one of nature’s most spectacular events: a total solar eclipse. For a little over one magical minute, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, plunging the island into an eerie twilight as stars and planets briefly become visible in the middle of the evening.
Whether you’re planning to join hundreds of people at an official viewing point, watch from a quiet beach with a picnic, or celebrate with one of the island’s specially curated Ibiza eclipse events, here’s everything you need to know.
Why is this eclipse so special?
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun’s light. While total eclipses happen somewhere on Earth roughly every 18 months, it’s incredibly rare for one to pass directly over Spain.
The Balearic Islands lie within the path of totality, meaning observers in Ibiza and Formentera will experience a total eclipse, while much of mainland Europe will only see a partial eclipse. It’s expected to be one of Spain’s most significant astronomical events for decades, attracting visitors, astronomers and photographers from around the world.
What time is the eclipse in Ibiza?
The eclipse takes place in the evening, just before sunset.
- 7:39pm – The partial eclipse begins as the Moon first starts to move across the Sun.
- 8:32pm – Totality begins.
- 8:33pm – Maximum eclipse.
- 8:34pm – Totality ends.
- 8:53pm – The eclipse ends as the Moon moves away from the Sun.
The period of totality lasts for just over one minute, making every second count.
Do you need eclipse glasses?
Yes. You should wear certified solar eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) whenever any part of the Sun is visible. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe and won’t protect your eyes.
The only time it’s safe to remove your eclipse glasses is during the brief period of totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun. During those precious moments you can safely admire the Sun’s spectacular corona with the naked eye. As soon as the first sliver of sunlight reappears, your eclipse glasses should go straight back on before looking up again.
Because the eclipse happens shortly before sunset, choosing a location with an uninterrupted view of Ibiza’s western horizon will give you the best chance of enjoying the full spectacle.
The best places to watch the 2026 solar eclipse in Ibiza
The Consell d’Eivissa has designated six official public viewing locations across the island, chosen for their open horizons and excellent visibility. These sites will host the largest gatherings and offer some of the best vantage points for experiencing the eclipse.
They include the areas of Cala Gració, Cala Molí, Cala Conta, Sa Pedrera de Port des Torrent, Cala Llentia, San Antonio and The Bay.

Where to celebrate the 2026 solar eclipse in Ibiza

Beachouse is marking the eclipse with a specially curated edition of its celestial-inspired Lunar dinner series, with the special solar eclipse edition on 12 August changing its name to SOLAR, a special beachfront gathering of gastronomy, sound, dance, and connection.

The Balearic Government and local authorities have designated three official viewing zones on Ibiza’s little sister island, including Cap d’es Barbara, where a special star-and-eclipse-gazing event has been organised directly by the Consell Insular de Formentera and the local Astronomy Association.
The experience will feature four professional telescopes and large digital screens. After totality, it transitions directly into a guided observation of the Perseid meteor shower until 23:00.
The other two spots include the coastal lagoon of S’Estany des Peix close to the port of Formentera, and Es Arenals de Migjorn on the south-central coast of the island.
